Course Numbering
Washington University adopted a new course labeling structure in Fall 2025. The first part is the subject code indicating the area of study: for example, ANTHRO for Anthropology or MEMS for Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. The second part is a four-digit course number. Course numbers demonstrate a progression of difficulty and/or depth in coursework.
- 1000 to 1999 indicates an introductory undergraduate course, usually without prerequisites.
- 2000 to 2999 indicates an introductory or intermediate undergraduate course, sometimes with prerequisites.
- 3000 to 3999 indicates an upper-level undergraduate course, often with a prerequisite of a prior course or class standing (e.g., junior standing).
- 4000 to 4999 indicates an undergraduate course or seminar with advanced content, in which a graduate student may be eligible to register.
- 5000 to 9999 indicates a graduate course, in which advanced undergraduates may request to register.
The presence of a course in this Bulletin signifies that it is part of the curriculum currently offered and may be scheduled for registration.
