Financial Economics Specialization for Economics Majors

By completing a specialized set of electives, majors (prime or second, including dual majors) can earn the Financial Economics Specialization.

Students should notify the department of their intent to earn the Financial Economics Specialization by completing the form on the department's website at least one semester prior to graduation.

Program Requirements

  • Declared major in Economics, Math+Economics, or Econ+CSE
  • Completion of extra elective(s) and an integrated set of electives (These details are described below and are specific to each major.)

Major in Economics

  • Total Units Required: 37 to 39 (for the major) + 3 = 40 to 42 total units
  • Grade Requirement: All courses must be completed with the letter grade option, and a grade of at least C- must be earned in each. (A grade of at least C is required in study abroad coursework.)

Students with a B.A. or second major in economics must do the following, in addition to completing the major requirements:

  • Complete one additional economics elective at the 3000 or 4000 level, or complete FIN 3150.
  • A minimum of three courses must be drawn from the approved "List of Financial Economics Electives" below or be approved substitutes from a study abroad program.

Major in Economics + Computer Science

  • Total Units Required: 54 (for the major) + 3 = 57 total units
  • Grade Requirement: All courses must be completed with the letter grade option, and a grade of at least C- must be earned in each. (A grade of at least C is required in study abroad coursework.)

Students pursuing this dual major through the McKelvey School of Engineering or Arts & Sciences must do the following, in addition to the major requirements:

  • Complete one additional economics elective at the 3000 or 4000 level, or complete FIN 3150.
  • A minimum of three of the four courses must be drawn from the approved "List of Financial Economics Electives" above or be approved substitutes from a study abroad program.

Major in Mathematics + Economics

  • Total Units Required: 57 (for the major) + 3 = 60 total units
  • Grade Requirement: All courses must be completed with the letter grade option, and a grade of at least C- must be earned in each. (A grade of at least C is required in study abroad coursework.)

Students with a major in Math+Econ have two options through which the Financial Economics Specialization may be earned.

Option 1 (when completing the major with three Economics electives and four Math electives)

  • Complete one additional economics elective at the 3000 or 4000 level, or complete FIN 3150. Therefore, completion of the major plus the specialization requires four economics electives (or three economics electives and FIN 3150) and four math electives, subject to the constraints below:
    • The four math electives must come from the approved list for the major, or a student may complete three math electives from the approved list and one SDS elective from the preapproved electives list.
    • A minimum of three of the four total economics electives must be drawn from the approved "List of Financial Economics Electives" above or be approved substitutes from a study abroad program.
    • A minimum of three of the four total economics electives must come from the approved list for the major.

Option 2 (when completing the major with four Economics electives and three Math electives)

Students must complete the following:

  • Four economics electives, where both of the following criteria must be satisfied:
    • At least two of the four electives must be drawn from the "List of Financial Economics Electives" above.
    • At least three of the four economics electives must be drawn from the approved list for the major.
  • The three math electives must be drawn from the approved list for the major.
  • In addition, for the specialization, students must complete MATH 4560.
